Herald vs the official Hermes Agent app

As of 20 October 2026 there is no official Hermes Agent app to download. Nous Research is hiring for native iOS and Android apps, and co-founder Teknium announced the mobile app kickoff on 13 October, with no release date. Until it ships, community apps such as Herald fill the gap. This page compares Herald with what Nous has actually announced, and we will update it when the official app is out.

What Nous Research has announced

On 7 October 2026 Nous Research announced a Series B funding round “to bring Hermes Agent to new frontiers (and, yes, build a mobile app)”. Its careers page lists a Software Engineer, Mobile role to own “the native iOS and Android apps, the shared cross-platform layer behind them, and the backend work”, with goals that include push notifications, offline resilience and a mobile experience consistent with desktop and web.

On 13 October 2026 co-founder Teknium welcomed a new mobile engineer with “the mobile app kickoff begins!!” Asked whether it would ship that week, he replied “Not quite”. On 7 October he had written that the mobile app “will be almost exclusively focused on consumer”.

Community requests for an official app are still open on GitHub, including #98196 for a native iPhone companion and #126292 for native Android and iOS apps. Nothing else has been announced: no feature list, price or date.

What the community has asked for

The open iPhone request, #98196, lists what its author wants from an official client: secure pairing with your Hermes, a conversation and session list with streaming tool status, push notifications for finished tasks and approvals, voice input and playback, sharing files and photos into a session, and clear approval controls. These are requests from users, not commitments from Nous.

For reference, Herald covers each of them: QR pairing with npx herald-setup, a Sessions list with live tool activity, optional push when a bot finishes or needs approval, voice notes and read-aloud, the share sheet and attachments, and approval cards before risky tool runs.

If you want an app now

Nobody outside Nous knows what the first official version will include. It may well become the default choice for many people, especially newcomers, and an official app has strengths a community app can’t match, such as being built alongside Hermes itself.

Herald is for people who already run Hermes on their own machines and want more than chat today: every bot on every computer in one roster, group chats across machines, approvals, an on-device wake word, Hermes Pet, the Apple Watch and CarPlay. It costs $12.99 once and needs no account.

If you’d rather wait, the free messaging gateway and the web dashboard work today, and free community apps are listed in our iPhone and Android guides.

Questions

Is there an official Hermes Agent app yet?

No. As of 20 October 2026, Nous Research hasn’t released one. See our dated answer.

Is Herald the official app?

No. Herald is an independent, unofficial app by lukethedev. It isn’t made, endorsed or supported by Nous Research.

Will Herald keep working when the official app launches?

Herald talks to the Hermes Agent on your own computer, not to a Nous service, so an official app launching doesn’t switch it off. You can install both and compare.

Will the official app be free?

Nous Research hasn’t said. We’ll add pricing here once it’s announced.
